NSW Spotted Gum is generally lighter in colour than its QLD counterpart. Its heartwood displays a wide spectrum of tones, ranging from very pale browns to deep, rich browns. Overall, it is characterised by light tan hues, subtle grey undertones, and a light to medium brown appearance, with some lighter boards showing a faint orange tint. The sapwood is noticeably paler in contrast.
The timber typically features an interlocked grain, often showcasing a distinctive ‘fiddleback’ figure—a wavy grain pattern that adds unique visual appeal. Colour variations can occur depending on the region where the timber is grown.
NSW Spotted Gum is rated as Heartwood Class 1 for above-ground durability, is termite resistant, and has a Janka hardness rating of 11.
